Remote work — how we do it

Before 2020, when thinking of remote work, most of us had imagined sitting peacefully in the garden with a laptop and a cup of nice iced coffee chilling.

And then the time has come, when the peace was taken away, and everyone who could was rushing off to work from home. And none of the expectations came true. There were however household members, pets, occasional lack of space, and unsuitable background for a long videoconference.

Upsides, which turned to be downsides over time, would make a long list, but let’s focus on actual advantages.

We actually can!

One may think we work less — less efficient, less focused, less engaged. Nothing could be more wrong. Weren’t there some days, when at the office you could meet a colleague you haven’t seen for a while, and spent 40 minutes on an amusing chat?

We know the work has to be done, and what we committed to — has to be completed, and the deadlines should be met.

If, in the meantime, one goes for a walk, to take a breath of fresh air or drives kids to the nursery, — that is completely fine.

At the end of the day, what really matters is the result.

The people

That’s right, we do appreciate and miss contact with people. Remember the days when it was hard to stay in focus due to the noise at the office? We miss the day-to-day conversations, the shared coffees, the playroom games and more. Although we meet online and organize team nights out, it’s still not quite the same. Even the biggest introverts admit it would be great to return to a bustling office (maybe not permanently, but from time to time).

Develop your skills

We save time on transportation, we gain time for ourselves. Yoga? There you go. Google Cloud Architect certification? Not a problem. Whatever you like. Improving your English or Italian course? Sounds great. If you find the time for yourself, it does not matter what you do. That time is yours and there are plenty of ways to spend it.

There are always two sides to a story. Every period, apart from having the obvious cons, has its pros, and we are constantly trying to make the best from it.

A lot has changed. Some changes will stay with us forever. The most important thing is to be able to find yourself in them, take matters into your own hands, and make the reality the best it can be.

In anticipation of this return, we have to remember to take care of yourselves and comply with the rules, that are still fully applicable: social distancing, disinfection, masks.
